Mozibox: Physician Community for Salary Transparency and Careers

Mercor is an AI powered recruiting platform founded in 2023 by Brendan Foody, Adarsh Hiremath, and Surya Midha in San Francisco. It automates candidate screening, AI driven interview sessions, and payroll management. Mercor has raised $3.6 million in seed funding led by General Catalyst, $32 million in a Series A led by Benchmark at a $250 million valuation, and $100 million in a Series B led by Felicis Ventures at a $2 billion valuation.

My AI Interview Experience

I applied for fun to Mercor’s Doctors contractor role (up to 20 hours/week; the pay is not bad for a remote position) to try out its AI interview experience. The role focuses on building AI systems for medicine specific research tasks and simulating clinical workflows. The next morning I received an email from the recruiter with instructions on how to complete the AI interview. That afternoon he called to remind me and explained that the interview would be exclusively AI driven and consist of a single session. He said its transcript and scores would be sent to the project manager for the final decision, and that no prior AI experience was required.

Once I began the interview, the AI asked three core questions:

1) My medical field and why I have deep domain expertise
2) A recent case and how I reasoned through it
3) An example of an LLM application in my field along with evaluation criteria and rubrics

The system asked intelligent follow up questions based on my answers but did cut me off a few times while I was explaining my thoughts. If you are considering this role, read up on LLMs and think through a concrete application in your specialty. Be ready to describe evaluation metrics and success criteria so you can demonstrate both vision and rigor.

Recruiter Domain Knowledge Gaps

Despite the sophistication of the AI session, the human recruiter showed limited understanding of medical roles. The job listing described a general practitioner without clarifying whether that meant primary care only or if other specialties would be eligible. When I asked for clarification, the recruiter could not answer. If Mercor intends to excel in healthcare recruiting they will need to build deeper expertise on the human side as well.

Mixed Feedback on Online Forums

Some users report that roles feel more like short term data labeling projects than dedicated medical AI positions. Others praise the platform for its efficiency, clear processes, and engaging AI driven tasks. Some express concerns about how interview data might be used and shared. I do not know the truth behind all the online opinions about Mercor, so do your own due diligence and participate at your own comfort level.

Conclusion

My AI interview with Mercor was a revealing glimpse into the future of hiring. It was efficient, adaptive, and surprisingly human in its follow up if a bit abrupt at times. Whether you view it as an exciting opportunity or a cautionary experiment, it illustrates how AI is already reshaping what it means to interview and be interviewed.

Update #1 (6/1/2025)

While I was waiting to hear back, I connected with Abby the project lead at Mercor. Abby, who graduated from Harvard and recently joined the team, explained that they have received a surge of applications and need to pause this project for about 7 to 10 days while they catch up. She mentioned there is an assessment step before assignments are made and that I will receive further instructions once I reach that stage. I also shared some feedback on the job listing which she welcomed. It is reassuring to know that there are real people behind this process. Abby has been very responsive, and overall I have had a positive experience so far.
