Full Job Description

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as assistant dean for the Office of Assessment and Evaluation.


This position will report to the associate dean of Educational Affairs in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and serve as a member of the College of Medicine – Phoenix (COM-P) leadership team. The assistant dean of Assessment and Evaluation will have the responsibility to design, develop, implement and manage comprehensive academic data essential for student assessment and program evaluation aligned with COM-P outcomes and accreditation standards. This individual will collaborate with other leaders to streamline data collection and analysis to best communicate student performance, progress, postgraduation outcomes and educational program outcomes.


It is expected that the candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching and/or scholarly work and qualify for an appointment at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor. For clinicians, part of their effort may be allocated to patient care and clinical teaching.

Duties & Responsibilities


Assessment:

Design, development, implementation, management and continuous quality improvement of academic data in a comprehensive program across the entire medical school curriculum. Determine methods for systems analysis, interpret and disseminate academic data to varied audiences of key stakeholders. Work with course and education program leaders to ensure a variety of robust student assessments that are aligned with College of Medicine outcomes and accreditation expectations. Strong knowledge of assessment and evaluation principles, tools and best practices in higher education. Collaborate with the information technology team to streamline assessment data collection processes and monitoring. Analyze and report data in a manner that effectively and clearly communicates student performance to various stakeholders. Provide input into the Medical Student Performance Evaluation as needed. Create and launch formative and summative assessment methods and tools in alignment with accreditation standards and the medical school’s educational program objectives. Ensures all policies related to assessment and evaluation are up to date. Prepare and present reports to various stakeholders and committees as needed in support of accreditation, quality improvement processes and strategic planning.


Program Evaluation:

Design, develop and execute a school-wide program evaluation in collaboration with the UME vice dean and their leadership team. Participate in standing curriculum committees and other COM-P meetings, education retreats and other mission-based activities, as requested. Ensure program evaluation activities and outcomes are aligned with accreditation and curricular expectations. Provide ad hoc support to faculty, staff and trainees in relevance to program evaluation.


Scholarship:

Participate in educational scholarship, including publications and presentations. Lead and contribute to medical education scholarship locally, regionally and nationally with faculty, staff and trainees. Participate in national organizations relevant to assessment and evaluation and advancement of medical education.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Have exceptional written and oral communication skills. Show strong organizational and planning abilities. Demonstrate knowledge of educational theories and concepts, with particular focus on assessment and evaluation. Be able to manage multiple educational projects simultaneously and work with different teams of educators and educational researchers. Be able to conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis and interpret and present this data for dissemination to various audiences. Pursue research and scholarly opportunities in the area of assessment and evaluation in medical education. Be able to oversee and manage a team in terms of their work progress as well as their continuous professional development.  Be able to work independently and lead project teams effectively. Be proficient in data management software.


Minimum Qualifications

Hold an MD, MD/PhD, MD/MS or PhD degree. Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in assessment and evaluation in medical or health professions education. Have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a leadership role in higher education, preferably in assessment and evaluation. Be experienced in designing robust assessment tools in higher education. Demonstrate experience in basic research design and statistical analysis. Demonstrate experience in developing, using and improving learning analytics and data displays.


Preferred Qualifications

Have experience in medical school accreditation (LCME) and education continuous quality improvement. Have a background and experience in educational psychology or educational measurement Demonstrate experience with the application of technological advancements (e.g., AI) on assessment and evaluation data. For MD candidates, hold an Arizona medical license or be eligible for medical licensure.
