The Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides leadership, management oversight, and clinician expertise for select NCCN programs and products. The CMO is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and participates with the other members of NCCN Senior Leadership to ensure the continued efficient and effective operation of NCCN programs. Integral to the Senior Leadership Team, the CMO collaborates with peers to ensure the development of new programs, the continued efficient and effective operations of existing programs, and contributes to the development and success of strategic goals for the organization.
The CMO participates in the development of new clinical programs and products in accordance with the strategic goals and objectives of NCCN. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Travel is required. This position requires frequent domestic and international travel.
Direct reports to the position include: Senior Director, Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (JNCCN); Senior Director, Continuing Education; and Senior Director, Compendia Development (joint reporting to SVP, Chief Scientific Officer).
Requirements
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Information Programs
Together with the Senior Vice President, Clinical Information Programs, provides leadership, clinician expertise, and oversight to NCCN’s Clinical Information Programs including the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) and the associated NCCN Guidelines for Patients®.
Provides leadership and oversight of select NCCN Compendia programs, including working with program leaders to grow awareness and use of these products.
Together with the Senior Director, Information Technology and Senior Manager, Guidelines Information Standardization, provides leadership, medical and clinical expertise, and oversight of NCCN’s ongoing informatics efforts, including the digitization of the NCCN Guidelines® and integration of NCCN Templates® and Compendia products.
Collaborates with the Director, Global Program to support the coordination and growth of various global efforts of NCCN, including adaptation of NCCN content globally.
Interacts regularly with individual faculty members at NCCN Member Institutions including thought leaders in all therapeutic areas of oncology.
Continuing Education
Responsible for general leadership and oversight of the NCCN Continuing Medical Education Program, which includes in-person/hybrid conferences/symposia, as well as on-line only webinars.
Participates as a member of the Senior Leadership team that develops strategic goals for Continuing Education programs developed and implemented by NCCN.
Provides management and direction to the NCCN Senior Director of Continuing Education.
Works with the Senior Director, Continuing Education to continuously grow established and innovate new NCCN educational offerings.
Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network
Provides leadership and oversight of the JNCCN team.
Provides management and direction to the Senior Director of JNCCN and participates in meetings with the Editorial Board and publisher to optimize collaboration of all developmental stakeholders in JNCCN.
Helps select specific JNCCN articles to highlight for Press Release notifications, and for special JNCCN Selects issues.
Works with the Senior Director of JNCCN to optimize online and print content to grow readership and impact.
Other Responsibilities
Builds and maintains positive and effective relationships with all NCCN’s constituencies including: staff, scientific community, member institutions and Guidelines panels, Board of Directors, outside professional organizations (patient advocacy community, payers, licensees and government agencies), and pharmaceutical and device industries.
Participates as a member of the Senior Leadership team that develops strategic goals for the organization. Participates in strategic planning for NCCN as a part of the overall Strategic Planning process.
Together with other members of NCCN’s Senior Leadership and Leadership teams, plans and implements enhancements to NCCN’s clinical content and new products to expand influence and enhance licensing opportunities.
Foster ongoing relationships with NCCN program leaders and staff, helping to create an innovative, creative, and synergistic work environment.
Participates in budget development for assigned programs.
Interacts with Marketing, Communications and Public Relations team to develop/vet Press Releases, respond to external requests for comments, and analyze user evaluations of NCCN content and utilization.
Collaborates with the Vice President, Policy & Advocacy to provide expertise for the NCCN Policy Program to assure the influence of NCCN and its services at the National Level with government, payers, and industry as needed.
Represents NCCN at both domestic and international clinical and scientific meetings as directed by the Chief Executive Officer.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
MD or DO, with a minimum of 10 years of Oncology experience – preferably at an NCI-designated cancer center.
Excellent leadership skills and the ability to manage and communicate across multiple groups and constituencies both internal and external to NCCN.
Demonstrated record of accomplishment of working successfully with academic, internationally prominent academicians and physician leaders, diverse management teams, community organizations, local and state government officials as well as other major constituencies.
Ability to build consensus and to work through others in achieving desired results and objectives.
Knowledgeable about the contemporary issues and trends involved with cancer care, healthcare reform, reimbursement, quality and value in cancer care, and clinical decision support.
Strong knowledge of cancer treatment in various oncology practice environments.
Strong knowledge of and/or experience in the NCCN Guideline development process preferred.
Knowledge of and/or experience in global oncology a plus.
Knowledge of and/or experience in health or medical informatics a plus.
Demonstrated success in motivating and mentoring staff at all levels.
