The Medical/Scientific Director serves as the primary medical and scientific expert on immune deficiency and related conditions, providing strategy, guidance, and expertise. This role collaborates with internal teams to ensure accuracy of medical information, oversees clinician education initiatives, research grant programs, and serves as a spokesperson to raise awareness among healthcare professionals and the public. The position requires at least 10+ years of experience in human immunology or related biomedical sciences and is remote with occasional travel.

Summary of position:
The Medical/Scientific Director reports to the President and CEO and serves as the primary medical/scientific expert for the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF), providing strategy, guidance, and expertise on matters related to the immune system, including immune deficiency, primary immunodeficiencies, and related conditions. This role will work closely with the organization's leadership, programming, development, policy, and communications teams, and external stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and credibility of medical information disseminated by the organization and will help shape the strategic direction for clinician education, outreach, and research initiatives. This position is remote with occasional travel for conferences and meetings and periodic travel to the IDF offices in Hanover, MD.
Position responsibilities:
Serve as the organization's subject matter expert on the immune system, immune deficiency, rare disease, human genetics, and primary immunodeficiencies, including diagnosis, treatment, and management. Collaborate with key departmental teams to ensure the scientific and medical accuracy of programmatic activities. Provide medical/scientific review and consultation for educational materials and resources developed by the organization. Work closely with the IDF team on strategy for clinician education initiatives. Provide oversight for IDF survey research and the research grant program. Serve as a medical/scientific spokesperson for the organization, presenting (as appropriate) at Collaborate closely with members of the IDF team to contribute efforts to raise awareness about immune deficiency among healthcare professionals and the general public. Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and participate in relevant medical and scientific meetings.
Education:
Hold a terminal, clinical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent) and training in a relevant specialty. Additional doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant field preferred.
Experience:
An expertise, working knowledge, and keen understanding of human immunology and related biomedical sciences. At least 10+ years’ experience. Outreach / ambassador experience. Experience in non-profit or government sector a plus. Excellent communication skills.
