The Consulting Medical Advisor is a contract role supporting The Health Institute's mission to empower individuals through cellular-health-driven lifestyle coaching. This non-clinical consultative position involves serving as ordering physician for functional labs, reviewing results for safety, advising on protocols, and facilitating internal training.
Key Responsibilities
- • Serves as the ordering physician for approved functional labs (GI-MAP, DUTCH, OAT).
- • Reviews results for safety screening and pattern recognition.
- • Participates in the Clinical Advisory Board to advise on protocols, escalated case themes, and practitioner education.
- • Facilitates internal training sessions for coaches and practitioners on functional wellness topics.
- • Supports curriculum development and scope-aligned training.
- • Serves as ordering physician of record for approved labs.
- • Reviews results to identify safety concerns and coaching-relevant patterns.
- • Recommends referrals when medical evaluation is needed.
- • Ensures compliance with clinical and legal standards.
- • Participates in monthly Clinical Advisory Board meetings.
- • Reviews protocols, supplement frameworks, and program guardrails.
- • Advises on safety, scope, and evidence alignment.
- • Consults on practitioner-escalated case patterns.
- • Provides non-diagnostic guidance and referral recommendations.
- • Facilitates internal training and development sessions for health coaches and practitioners.
- • Contributes to curriculum and training resources on functional medicine topics (e.g., gut health, detox, metabolic health.)
- • Supports practitioner development in red flag recognition and scope discipline.
- • Provides written recommendations or reviews as needed.
- • Serves as a resource for health coaches.
Required
- • MD with advanced functional or integrative medicine training
- • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in functional medicine
- • Experience leading training or facilitation sessions for wellness professionals
- • Familiarity with GI-MAP, DUTCH, OAT, and similar testing
- • Understanding of health coach scope of practice
- • Excellent communication and educational skills
- • Active medical license and appropriate liability insurance

Role Summary:
This is a non-clinical, consultative position. The Consulting Medical Advisor:
- Serves as the ordering physician for approved functional labs (GI-MAP, DUTCH, OAT).
- Reviews results for safety screening and pattern recognition.
- Participates in the Clinical Advisory Board to advise on protocols, escalated case themes, and practitioner education.

Scope & Boundaries:
This role does not involve:
- Diagnosing or treating clients
- Providing individualized medical advice
