The Medical Director of the UCSF Birth Center will oversee clinical, educational, and operational functions of the unit, including OB Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, Antepartum, and Postpartum units. This role involves coordinating high-risk obstetric care across UCSF sites and working closely with leadership to advance patient care, quality, safety, and education. Clinical duties include providing direct inpatient care and participating in shared on-call coverage, with encouragement to develop an outpatient practice within UCSF prenatal care sites.
Key Responsibilities
- • Lead efforts to enhance team collaboration through a focus on cohesive teamwork, bidirectional communication, and rounding.
- • Partner with nursing leadership on leader rounds and incident response to enhance the patient and employee experience.
- • Ensure progress toward Birth Center goals through collaborative goal setting and regular review and reporting of metrics.
- • Assure compliance with The Joint Commission’s performance measures and adherence to regulatory and external mandates.
- • Collaborate with physician leadership, other clinical services, UCSF Health leadership, clinicians, nursing, case management, utilization management, and pharmacy to ensure the highest quality, safest, and most efficient patient care.
- • Participate in regular meetings, status updates, leader rounds, and huddles with physician staff and nursing leadership to maximize patient care quality and safety.
- • Engage and actively lead the daily management system within the Birth Center, ensuring continuous oversight, improvement, operational efficiency, and fostering improved patient care and staff performance.
- • Support and guide clinical services to align and drive improvement efforts with UCSF Health’s True North and the Business Unit’s strategic goals.
- • Ensure vital organizational priorities are effectively communicated to the front-line staff of each physician clinical group.
- • Advance the principles of PRIDE Values throughout the Birth Center by setting, incorporating, and meeting specific metrics within quality improvement endeavors.
Required
- • MD, DO, or equivalent in a relevant field.
- • Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- • Experience managing high-acuity obstetric care in an academic setting— whether through subspecialty training (e.g., Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Hospitalist Medicine, or Acute/Critical Care) or through equivalent clinical leadership experience.
- • Six+ years post-Residency training, or 3 years after Fellowship completion.
Preferred
- • Completion of a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship preferred.
- • A successful track record of clinical expertise in both inpatient and outpatient obstetrics, including independent performance of and leadership in complex obstetric procedures and management of fetal complications in an academic medical setting.
- • Proven operational leadership experience, including managing multidisciplinary clinical teams or services.
- • A demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring medical learners at all levels and stages.
- • Academic excellence in research, scholarly and/or creative work.
- • Dedication to advancing health equity, including addressing social determinants of health and reducing barriers to care.
- • A demonstrated ability to champion technological innovation to improve clinical outcomes and provider documentation.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) invites applications for an accomplished clinical leader to serve as Medical Director of the UCSF Birth Center. This position represents a critical leadership opportunity to oversee and advance clinical, educational, and operational excellence in one of the nation’s leading academic obstetric units. The Medical Director of the Birth Center at UCSF Mission Bay will oversee the clinical, educational, and operational functions of the unit, including the OB Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, Antepartum, and Postpartum units. This leader will also coordinate high-risk, high-acuity obstetric care across other UCSF sites (including UCSF Parnassus) and with multidisciplinary adult consulting services. As a clinical leader and strategic partner, the Medical Director will work closely with the Department Chair, UCSF Health leadership — including the Executive Medical Director of Ob/Gyn and the Director of the OB Service Line — as well as with nursing administration and other key leaders to advance the highest standards of patient care, quality, safety, and education. The Medical Director will also partner closely with the Quality and Safety Officers to drive continuous improvements in clinical outcomes. Clinical responsibilities for this position include providing direct inpatient care at the UCSF Birth Center and participating in shared on-call coverage. Development of an outpatient practice within UCSF prenatal care sites is strongly encouraged.
