Medical Director

The Medical Director serves as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team for Merryfield Residence, a 9-bed ICF/IID for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The role involves certifying eligibility for admissions, providing medical oversight, performing monthly rounds, ordering labs and treatments, conducting annual physicals, and coordinating healthcare with other professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees and maintains the general health conditions and practices of the facility
  • Completes pre-admission, post-admission and annual assessments of each resident's health care needs. Conducts physical examinations annually
  • During the pre-admission process will ensure that the individual's medical status is thoroughly considered and addressed by the Interdisciplinary team, determines eligibility, and works collaboratively with the team to develop a healthcare plan
  • Participates in the review and update of individual program plans, as part of the interdisciplinary team either in person or through written reports to the team
  • Reviews and assesses each resident's general health, behavior, and treatment at least monthly by:
  • Developing and renewing medical orders for treatments including diet, medication, or therapy
  • Reviewing and signing all medical charts
  • Reviewing nurses' notes, health care plans, interviewing staff, observing residents, recording observations and recommendations in the medical notes
Required
  • Medical Degree from a qualified medical school (Required)
  • Licenses in Commonwealth of Virginia to practice medicine. (Required)
  • Valid Driver's License (required)

  • 4 years similar experience (preferred)

Alleghany Highlands Community Services provides services and support to individuals in our community with behavioral health challenges and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The incumbent in this position serves as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team for Merryfield Residence. Merryfield Residence is a 9 bed ICF/IID for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Medical Director certifies eligibility for each new admission and provides medical oversight of all nine residents. Determines and certifies each resident's ability to self-administer medications and appropriateness for intermediate nursing care prior to admission and recertifies this status annually

The Medical Director will perform monthly rounds to monitor overall healthcare, order labs, medication, treatment recommendations or referrals for specialized healthcare. The Medical Director will perform annual physical examinations and provide immunizations and treatment. The Medical Director will provide between 10-15 hours per month of services at Merryfield Residence. The Medical Director will consult with the pharmacist, psychiatrist, specialists and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate quality healthcare. The Medical Director must be available for consultation as needed and in the event of emergencies.

Provides services in compliance with all ICF/IID regulations. Provides and maintains current relevant certifications, registrations, licenses. Participates in continuing staff development and training in the field.

Achieves and maintains an adequate level of knowledge in other disciplines to meet the needs of the residents.


Position requires 10-15 hours per month and the ability to work some evening and weekend hours. Must be available in emergencies.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Medical Degree from a qualified medical school (Required)
  • 4 years similar experience (preferred)
  • Licenses in Commonwealth of Virginia to practice medicine. (Required)
  • Valid Driver's License (required)
