The role serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, providing visionary leadership to support exceptional science, strategic faculty recruitment, and development. The position fosters multidisciplinary collaboration, promotes departmental cohesiveness and inclusion, and maintains a strong, externally funded research program with national leadership presence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (MMI).
  • Foster and lead a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to microbiology and immunology research.
  • Provide visionary leadership to support exceptional science and strategic faculty recruitment and development.
  • Model professionalism in all actions and interactions.
  • Promote collaborations with other OHSU centers and departments, including the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI), Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), Knight Cancer Institute, Vollum Institute, and others.
  • Support the faculty in enhancing departmental cohesiveness and culture of excellence, inclusion, and discovery.
  • Advocate for departmental resources including space, personnel, and funding to support innovation.
  • Model impactful and collaborative research in microbiology or immunology.
  • Guide and enrich research training opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the department.
  • Maintain a strong, externally funded research program and national leadership presence.
  • Serve as a mentor and sponsor for junior and mid-career faculty and trainees.
  • Represent the department within and outside the institution, including philanthropic and community engagement.
Required
  • PhD and/or MD
  • Accomplished academic career with an established and externally funded research program in microbiology or immunology.
  • Demonstrated excellence in mentorship, faculty development, and research training.
  • Visionary leadership with experience creating and implementing strategic academic and research initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead with professionalism, integrity, transparency, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive academic environments and institutional values.
  • Ability to lead consistent with OHSU Core Competencies, including collaboration, performance evaluation, and personal effectiveness.

Department Overview
