Pediatric Hospitalist

Pediatric hospitalists provide clinical services across multiple sites including inpatient hospitalist services, consulting, sedation for imaging, and support in PICU and NICU. They also staff ambulatory acute care at the Immediate Care Center, lead newborn nursery teams, and provide pediatric consultations at a rehabilitation facility. Faculty engage in clinical teaching, education, advocacy, quality improvement, and scholarship within a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical services at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (Main Campus), Lurie Children’s Immediate Care Center, Northwestern Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab
  • Lead general inpatient pediatric hospitalist services (both teaching and non-teaching)
  • Provide a general pediatric consulting service
  • Provide sedation for medical imaging studies
  • Support front-line clinical care in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
  • Cover the hospital-wide Critical Assessment Team
  • Staff the Lurie Children’s Immediate Care Center providing ambulatory, acute care
  • Precept pediatric residents in ambulatory acute care settings
  • Lead newborn nursery teams (both teaching and non-teaching) at Prentice Women’s Hospital
  • Lead delivery room / consultative team and support NICU care at Prentice Women’s Hospital
  • Provide pediatric consultations for the physical medicine and rehabilitation team at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab
  • Facilitate communication with subspecialists to support patient care at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab
  • Provide 1800 hours of clinical service per year for full-time faculty
  • Participate in clinical teaching and facilitate Problem Based Learning or Medical Clinical Skills courses
  • Engage in education, advocacy, quality improvement, health equity, clinical informatics and scholarship
Required
  • Board eligible/board certified pediatricians
  • Valid state medical license as MD/DO or pending
Preferred
  • Academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment rank
  • Interest in careers in Academic Hospital Medicine or Pediatric Subspecialties such as Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care
  • Experience or interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate medical trainees

Pediatric Hospitalist Positions at Lurie Children’s in Chicago

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine are seeking board eligible/board certified pediatricians to join a growing team of over 85 pediatric hospitalists.

Clinical Activities Across The Division Of Hospital-Based Medicine

Pediatric hospitalists in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine provide clinical services at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (Main Campus), Lurie Children’s Immediate Care Center, Northwestern Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

At Lurie Children’s, hospitalist faculty lead several general inpatient pediatric hospitalist services (both teaching and non-teaching), a general pediatric consulting service, provide sedation for medical imaging studies and support front-line clinical care in both the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The inpatient, ICU-based teams also cover the hospital-wide Critical Assessment Team. Across all teams, one rewarding aspect of working at Lurie Children’s is providing clinical care alongside one’s colleagues in shared workrooms that enable frequent collaboration.

Hospitalist faculty also staff the Lurie Children’s Immediate Care Center, providing ambulatory, acute care at family friendly hours. In this setting, faculty have the opportunity to work alongside their colleagues, precept pediatric residents and provide high-quality, ambulatory acute care to patients in the Chicago community.

At Prentice Women’s Hospital, hospitalist faculty lead several newborn nursery teams (both teaching and non-teaching), a delivery room / consultative team, and support front-line clinical care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

At Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, hospitalist faculty provide pediatric consultations for the physical medicine and rehabilitation team at this state-of-the-art, inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility. Team members also facilitate communication with subspecialists to support the care of patients at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Positions Available

Full-time and part-time pediatric hospitalist positions are available at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Lurie Children’s Immediate Care Center. Positions exclusively on the inpatient, general pediatric hospitalist teams (day+night roles and nighttime only roles) as well as positions that combine activities across areas can be designed in order to tailor the mix of clinical activities to the unique interests of each candidate.

Position Details

  • Full time faculty in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine provide 1800 hours of clinical service per year.
  • Clinical schedules are published in several month increments and there are frequent shift trades within the group to ensure faculty can adjust their clinical schedules when needed.
  • Lurie Children’s utilizes the Epic electronic health record system.
  • Academic appointments for faculty are through the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Appointment will be commensurate with the academic accomplishments of the candidate.
  • Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellowship or certification is not required for this position.

Education

In addition to clinical teaching, many faculty regularly facilitate Problem Based Learning or Medical Clinical Skills courses at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. There are abundant opportunities to be involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate medical trainees and numerous mentors and educational leaders in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine.

Applicants interested in careers in Academic Hospital Medicine, as well as applicants interested in spending shorter periods in Hospital Medicine before entering fellowships in Pediatric Subspecialties such as Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care are welcome to apply. The expected base pay range for this position is $179,633-$209,480

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal comparators; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
