Provide comprehensive anesthesiology care including preanesthetic evaluation, intraoperative anesthetic care, postoperative rounds, resuscitation, intensive care, therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks, and chronic pain consultation. Engage in clinical teaching of residents, medical students, and nurse anesthetists, participate in departmental research and clinical trials, and contribute to institutional service and committee work.
Key Responsibilities
- • Provide care to patients at VCU Health as assigned by the Department Chair or Chair’s delegate including preanesthetic evaluation, intraoperative anesthetic care, postoperative rounds, resuscitation and intensive care, therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultation in cases of chronic pain.
- • Direct the activities of nurse anesthetists as assigned by Chair or Chair’s delegate.
- • Provide “bedside:” clinical teaching of residents, medical students, student nurse anesthetists and others.
- • Participate in the didactic teaching programs of the Department and attend conferences, rounds, and staff meetings as required by Chair.
- • May pursue clinical or laboratory research and other scholarly interests independently within the guidelines of the Institution and Department.
- • Participate in clinical trials depending upon interest and area of specialization.
- • May serve on various departmental, School of Medicine, University or VCU Health System committees as requested by Chair or determined via individual interest.
- • Provide clinical anesthesiology care to patients including main OR and ambulatory areas.
- • May supervise and direct Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) as appropriate.
- • Direct anesthesia care in other critical care areas of the medical center.
Required
- • MD or DO degree.
- • ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Critical Care Certification.
- • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia.
- • Eligible for employment in the United States.
- • Good communication, clinical and teaching skills.
- • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Mission or Goal of Unit: The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to delivering the best possible cardiac anesthetic to our patients, to advancing research and quality improvement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine and training the next generation of anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs along with medical student teaching.
