Psychiatrist, Outpatient

The Psychiatrist in the outpatient division provides diagnostic assessment, treatment, and crisis intervention for patients admitted to inpatient units. This includes conducting psychiatric evaluations, mental status examinations, and documenting patient progress and treatment courses according to departmental standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • The Psychiatrist provides diagnostic assessment for each patient through a psychiatric interview. The diagnostic assessment includes but is not limited to an assessment of risk of hurting self or others.
  • Helps patients by evaluating medical and psychosocial conditions.
  • Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
  • The psychiatrist provides psychiatric medical management for patients in the program and sees the patients on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This psychiatrist is also available to assist with the management of crisis situations involving patients.
  • In collaboration with the therapist, develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of psychotropic medications.
  • Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
  • Provides patient education on issues such as medication managements and in symptom management.
  • Will also provide family education as appropriate.
  • The psychiatrist will provide referral and request for consultation for patients in the program with medical surgical needs.
  • The psychiatrist will assist with the coverage of the department for absent psychiatrists at the direction of the Medical Director.
  • The psychiatrist will assist the team in developing strong aftercare plans for the patients in the program.
  • The Psychiatrist will participate with other medical providers in psychiatrist meetings, hospital committees as assigned and will collaborate with physicians in medical surgical areas of the hospital in the management of psychiatric patients.
  • Maintains historical records in the EMR by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events.
  • Responsible for reviewing all medical record entries for assigned caseload.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  • May have unsupervised patient contact in the course of performing duties.
  • May provide teaching and supervision of psychiatric residents.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Required
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Licensed and currently registered in New York State.
  • The Psychiatrist will be credentialed as a member of the Medical Staff of Interfaith Medical Center.

This includes an initial psychiatric evaluation, mental status examination and diagnostic formulation, progress notes as per the departments recording standards, which describes patient observation, therapy rendered and course of treatment.

Education:
