The Division Director will provide strategic leadership for the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, overseeing clinical, research, and educational missions. The role involves faculty recruitment and development, program expansion, interdisciplinary collaboration, and administrative and financial oversight to advance the division's regional and national reputation.
Key Responsibilities

- • Oversee endocrine and diabetes program leadership within Harris Health and ensure appropriate staffing and clinic operations.
- • Oversee inpatient consult services at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center and Memorial Hermann TIRR.
- • Foster and expand multidisciplinary collaborations across UTHealth Houston and affiliated health systems.
- • Recruit, mentor, and support the career development of faculty and fellows while fostering a strong academic environment.
- • Promote the growth of clinical, translational, and basic science research within the division.
- • Expand the research portfolio, strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, and increase extramural funding while supporting scholarly activity among faculty and trainees.
- • Support and expand the division’s role in medical student, resident, and fellow education.
- • Partner with departmental leadership and the Director of Management Operations to oversee divisional finances, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- • Develop and sustain an environment in the patient care units that supports excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care.
- • Perform staff management functions including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling, and terminating assigned management, clinical, and support staff.
- • Facilitate, review, and approve the budget for UTHealth Houston and Surgery Services.
- • Provide coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff.
- • Serve as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and interpersonal skills.
- • Delegate authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, and organizational policies.
- • Identify patient and family needs of the populations served and recommend or develop new programs and services.
- • Collaborate with UTHealth Houston and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities and define the direction of department services.
- • Maintain an ongoing departmental Quality Improvement Plan and process consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan.
- • Develop and implement unit-specific standards, policies, and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services.
- • Continuously assess and improve assigned departments' performance while enhancing service.
- • Review relevant financial reports and implement cost-reduction strategies for supplies, staffing, and service agreements.
- • Participate in and/or chair committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate.
- • Assure interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained, and ongoing.
- • Follow up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled.
- • Collaborate to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services.
Required
- • Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or equivalent
- • Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism includes 11 faculty members, 4 full-time and 1 part-time staff physicians, 2 advanced practice providers, 5 certified diabetes care and education specialists, and 6 fellows. The division delivers specialized endocrine care across clinical locations and major health system partners, including Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, TIRR Memorial Hermann, and Harris Health.
Collectively, the division generates more than $12M in clinical charges, $4.1M in collections, and more than 68,000 work RVUs annually.
Position Key Accountabilities:
The Division Director/Associate Professor OR Professor ("The Director") in Internal Medicine will be responsible for the Division in the following areas:
Leadership and Strategy
Provide strategic leadership for the division’s clinical, research, and academic missions. The Director will strengthen the division’s national visibility while recruiting, mentoring, and retaining outstanding faculty and fellows and advancing programmatic growth across clinical, research, and educational activities.
Clinical Operations
Provide oversight of outpatient clinics and inpatient consultation services across UT Physicians, Harris Health, and Memorial Hermann to ensure high-quality patient care, efficient clinic flow, and appropriate patient access.
UT Physicians clinics include the UT Professional Building, Bellaire Station, Bayshore, Cinco Ranch, Sienna, and Greens. These sites provide comprehensive endocrine care, including thyroid fine needle aspiration and diabetes education services.
The division also plays a major role within Harris Health, including inpatient and outpatient services at LBJ Hospital, Smith Clinic, and Danny Jackson Health Center. The Director will oversee endocrine and diabetes program leadership within Harris Health and ensure appropriate staffing and clinic operations.
Inpatient consult services are provided at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center and Memorial Hermann TIRR, supporting complex endocrine management, diabetes metrics, and quality improvement initiatives.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Foster and expand multidisciplinary collaborations across UTHealth Houston and affiliated health systems. Current programs include a multidisciplinary Pituitary Clinic in collaboration with Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology, with ongoing discussions with Memorial Hermann regarding the development of a jointly branded Pituitary Center of Excellence.
Additional collaborations include partnerships with Orthopedics on metabolic bone disease and bone health initiatives, interpretation of DEXA imaging across UT Physicians clinics, and joint clinical protocols with Otolaryngology for thyroid and parathyroid disorders.
Faculty and Fellowship Development
Recruit, mentor, and support the career development of faculty and fellows while fostering a strong academic environment. The division maintains an ACGME-accredited Endocrinology Fellowship Program with six fellows and a strong commitment to trainee education and professional development.
Research
Promote the growth of clinical, translational, and basic science research within the division. Current efforts include participation in industry-sponsored clinical trials and collaborative research initiatives across UTHealth Houston. The Director will work to expand the research portfolio, strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, and increase extramural funding while supporting scholarly activity among faculty and trainees.
Education
Support and expand the division’s role in medical student, resident, and fellow education. Faculty contribute to several core medical school courses and maintain leadership roles within residency and fellowship training programs.
Administrative and Financial Oversight
Partner with departmental leadership and the Director of Management Operations to oversee divisional finances, budgeting, and resource allocation while supporting the long-term sustainability and growth of the division.
Additional Accountabilities:
- Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that supports excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes, including excellent risk-adjusted outcomes.
- Performing a variety of staff management functions, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling, and terminating assigned management, clinical, and support staff.
- Facilitating, reviewing, and approving the budget for UTHealth Houston and Surgery Services, including estimates of future personnel and equipment needs; ensuring that hospital resources are optimally utilized through participation in strategic planning and financial budgeting processes, and development of practices that achieve specific objectives and resolution of unfavorable performance variances; providing leadership and implementing strategies to provide cost-effective quality care.
- Providing coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff.
- Serving as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and interpersonal skills
- Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommending and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs; assuring that age-specific equipment, supplies, and educational resources are available for assigned units/services
- Collaborating with UTHealth Houston and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities and define the direction of department services, developing and implementing plans to achieve identified goals, including OR efficiency, productivity, and patient throughput targets across the care continuum
- Maintaining an ongoing departmental Quality Improvement Plan and process consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan; developing and implementing unit-specific standards, policies, and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services; continuously assessing and improving assigned departments' performance while enhancing service
- Reviewing relevant financial reports and implementing cost-reduction strategies for supplies, staffing, and service agreements at UTHealth Houston and MHH, including alternative equipment and supplies options
- Participating in and/or chairing committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate
- Assuring interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained, and ongoing. Following up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Collaborating to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services
The selected candidate for the position must have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or equivalent and a Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License. Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine is required.
