The role involves providing specialized fetal interventional and maternal-fetal surgery services within an academic Maternal-Fetal Medicine program. The position includes clinical care, diagnosis, performing minimally invasive and open fetal surgeries, multidisciplinary collaboration, and contributing to teaching and research activities.
Key Responsibilities
- • Provide consultative services to General Obstetricians in the treatment of obstetric and maternal fetal medicine concerns
- • Evaluate fetal conditions using ultrasound, fetal MRI, and genetic testing
- • Diagnose structural abnormalities, chromosomal conditions, and life-threatening fetal disorders
- • Assess maternal health factors impacting treatment and delivery options
- • Perform minimally invasive fetoscopic surgeries using small cameras and instruments inserted into the uterus
- • Conduct ultrasound-guided procedures such as fetal blood transfusions or shunt placements
- • Perform laser ablation for conditions like twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome
- • In select cases, participate in open fetal surgery where the uterus is temporarily opened to correct severe abnormalities
- • Communicate complex diagnoses clearly and compassionately to patients and families
- • Discuss potential risks, benefits, ethical considerations, and long-term outcomes for babies with complex prenatal diagnoses
- • Support families in making informed decisions regarding treatment or pregnancy management
- • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, genetic counselors, and social workers
- • Coordinate care plans from diagnosis through delivery and neonatal treatment
- • Supervise sonographers within the clinical practice
- • Participate in patient care, teaching, research, and committee service aligned with academic goals
- • Actively contribute to the educational mission of the department, including delivering lectures to fellows, residents, and medical students
- • Participate in Grand Rounds, M&M Conferences, Journal Club, division meetings, and departmental activities
Required
- • Completion of a terminal degree (MD or DO)
- • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Obstetrics & Gynecology residency (4 years)
- • Completion of Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship training
- • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology
- • Licensure with the Georgia Composite Medical Board required prior to employment

- • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Fetal Interventionalist

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is seeking a Fetal Interventionalist (Maternal–Fetal Surgery Specialist) committed to an academic career in Gynecology & Obstetrics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, based on qualifications and experience.
Established more than 25 years ago, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division was one of the first specialty units in the country. Today the division provides services at Emory Perinatal Center at Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Perinatal Center at Decatur, and the Emory Regional Perinatal Center at Grady Health System. The Emory Regional Perinatal Center is one of six centers in the state designated to care for high-risk infants.
