Provides comprehensive primary healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility, including diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, managing preventive care, and coordinating care with a multidisciplinary team. The role also involves emergency response, medical documentation and compliance, and participation in professional development and staff education.
Key Responsibilities
- • Conduct thorough medical evaluations, physical examinations, and medical histories for incarcerated individuals
- • Diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and infections
- • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medications, therapies, and interventions
- • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pharmaceuticals, laboratory work, radiological examinations, and screenings
- • Provide vaccinations, perform health screenings, and promote preventive care measures within the correctional population
- • Basic technical skills such as suturing, splinting and injections
- • Monitor and manage chronic diseases prevalent among incarcerated individuals, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C
- • Ensure proper medication management, including prescribing, adjusting dosages, and monitoring treatment effectiveness
- • Educate patients on disease management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and medication adherence
- • Collaborate with specialty care providers for consultations and referrals, when necessary
- • Respond to medical emergencies within the correctional facility, providing immediate assessment, stabilization, and necessary interventions
- • Coordinate with emergency medical services or arrange for transfers to external medical facilities, when required
- • Participate in emergency preparedness planning and training exercises to ensure efficient emergency response within the correctional setting
- • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, social workers, and other correctional staff, to ensure coordinated and integrated healthcare delivery
- • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, providing necessary information, consultations, and referrals
- • Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the overall healthcare delivery system
- • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, diagnoses, treatments, and medications administered
- • Adhere to patient confidentiality regulations and ensure the security and privacy of medical records
- • Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing correctional healthcare and professional ethical standards
- • Stay updated with the latest advancements in primary care, correctional medicine, and relevant healthcare regulations
- • Engage in continuous professional development activities
- • Provide training and education to correctional staff on primary healthcare topics, as needed
Required
- • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
- • Current and unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the state/jurisdiction where the correctional facility is located and DEA
- • Valid state identification
- • Experience in primary care
- • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills, with the ability to manage a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions
- • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
- • Ability to work effectively in a challenging and dynamic environment

The Primary Care Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility. This includes diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, managing preventive care, and coordinating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services within a medical home model.
