MEDICAL DIRECTOR STROKE

Provides leadership for the stroke program, including accreditation, program development, quality improvement, and problem-solving for clinical concerns. Works with medical leadership, nursing, quality, and staff to improve patient care, ensure compliance, and support education, access, integration, and performance goals across the stroke program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate the stroke program service goals and objectives to physician partners in support of program goals.
  • Work collaboratively with Stroke Program Administrator and Manager, Medical Director of the Stroke Program -Surgical, Nursing, Quality and Medical Staff to develop, review and approve policies and procedures that apply specifically to stroke patients.
  • Reviews and recommends the acquisition of new replacement equipment and technology.
  • Chairs all meetings that pertain to the stroke patient.
  • Assumes responsibility for continuous quality and performance improvement and develops indicators to measure quality, appropriateness and the cost effectiveness of care and compares results to national benchmarks.
  • Assumes responsibility to resolve issues and problems related to clinical practices.
  • Work collaboratively with Nursing, Quality and Medical Staff to develop multi-disciplinary evidence-based quality patient care.
  • Works with Leadership and Hospital CMO in establishing ways to measure, communicate and improve patient satisfaction.
  • Responsible for the oversight and education of the trainees (Fellows, residents, medical students) rotating on stroke services.
  • Assures that risk management and safety of patient care services are monitored and evaluated on a regular basis and appropriate actions are taken based on the findings.
  • Belonging & Inclusion: One community event for Stroke Education involving APPs and Physicians and one educational session at each of the community hospitals by the completion of the current fiscal year, 70% team member participation in engagement survey in 2027, achieve UMHSL targets in engagement survey with >.03 improvement in domains of psychological safety in 2027; collaborate with the medical director of the surgical stroke program
  • Access: post-discharged patients are seen within 4 weeks; create telestroke program for Community Hospitals during the upcoming fiscal year starting on July 2026; stroke call covered by an attending with a possible trainee, response time for phone calls in concordance UMHSL by-laws, attending chart documentation within 6 hours of TNK administration including documentation of personal review of imaging
  • Works collaboratively with Stroke Program Administrator and Program Manager to ensure that the stroke program is compliant with TJC stroke certification.
  • BASE + Growth/Finance/Integration/Innovation goals
  • S: reduce mortality for Stroke patients to top quartile performance in Vizient through collaboration with quality and patient safety teams in 3 years; work to create protocol for extended time window treatment patients with implementation the first quarter of the upcoming fiscal year starting on July 2026, maintain CSC certification, achieve AHA get-with-the-guidelines targets; achieve door-to-needle target <=60 minutes 85% of eligible patients, door-to-device direct patients <=90 minutes, transfer patients <=60 minutes in 50% of eligible patients. Significant reduction in ineligibility related to unknown diagnosis.
  • E: achieve UMHSL Press-Gainey targets for each team member (Physicians and APPs)
  • Growth: create of telestroke program for CH’s and expansion to extended time window treatment on the time-frame noted above
  • Finance: collaborate with revenue cycle and CDI team to align on UMHSL targets; achieve top quartile in Vizient for LOS
  • Integration: collaborate with UMH-AMC and UMH-West to have aligned protocols and work with One Epic team for full alignment of order sets, clinical care paths and documentation for taget of 4.1.28
  • Innovation: creation of telestroke program for UMHSL to serve off-hours and weekends for UMHSL in alignment with UMH-AMC program which will include telephonic communication, video assessment of potentially eligible patients, chart documentation and imaging review.

General Purpose of Job:

The Medical Director of the Stroke Program - Medical works with the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Neurosciences to provide leadership for the stroke program including accreditation, program development, quality improvement and problem-solving for clinical concerns, assuring that the professional services provided in the hospital and the community hospital meet patients’ needs in a timely, efficient, and high-quality manner. The Medical Director of the Stroke Program shall work closely to identify and resolve medical matters with the medical staff of the Sparrow System. The medical director should meet quarterly and yearly with the CMO to create and review performance on BASE + Growth goals.
