The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) leads efforts to advance clinical excellence, patient safety, physician engagement, and organizational performance in alignment with strategic objectives. The role bridges system-wide strategy with local implementation and is accountable for quality outcomes, credentialing, provider professionalism, performance improvement, value-based care initiatives, and growth of clinical programs. The CMO also supports reputational metrics, clinical research, graduate medical education, and employee health at the local level while collaborating with clinical leadership and medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
- • Lead efforts to advance clinical excellence, patient safety, physician engagement, and organizational performance.
- • Bridge system-wide strategy with local implementation.
- • Be accountable for quality outcomes, credentialing/privileging, provider professionalism, and performance improvement.
- • Support value-based care initiatives and growth of key clinical programs.
- • Support institutional performance on reputational metrics such as Leapfrog Safety Grades, CMS Star Ratings, and the Top 100 program.
- • Support clinical research activities, graduate medical education, and employee health at the local level where applicable.
- • Represent the subsidiary on the Senior Clinical Leadership Council.
- • Collaborate with peers, nursing leaders, quality, patient safety, regulatory and compliance teams across the system.
- • Work closely with the Chief of Staff and medical staff leaders to assist with hospital bylaws, peer review, and medical executive committee functions.
- • Support all applicable local, state and federal regulations.
Required
- • Doctoral Degree in Medicine, currently licensed physician who meets the qualifications for medical staff membership.
- • At least five years clinical practice experience and shall be encouraged to maintain membership in the state and national society relating to professional experience.
- • Board certification in field of American Board of Medical Specialties.
- • Prior experience in physician leadership role.
- • On-going clinical practice of approximately 0.4-0.6 % effort with active medical staff privileges at McLaren Northern Michigan.
Preferred
- • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or related field.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the senior physician executive at McLaren subsidiary hospital(s). This role is responsible for leading efforts to advance clinical excellence, patient safety, physician engagement, and organizational performance in alignment with McLaren Health Care’s strategic objectives.
Reporting directly to the system’s Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, with a dotted line to the subsidiary CEO, the CMO bridges system-wide strategy with local implementation. The role is accountable for quality outcomes, credentialing/privileging, provider professionalism, performance improvement, support of value-based care initiatives, and growth of key clinical programs. Additionally, the CMO supports institutional performance on reputational metrics such as Leapfrog Safety Grades, CMS Star Ratings, and the Top 100 program.Where applicable, the CMO supports clinical research activities, graduate medical education, and employee health at the local level.
The CMO actively represents the subsidiary on the Senior Clinical Leadership Council, collaborating with peers, nursing leaders, quality, patient safety, regulatory and compliance teams across the McLaren system.
