Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Careers

Everything you need to know about becoming an MSL, one of the most popular physician transitions into pharma.

What is an MSL?

Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) are field-based medical professionals who serve as scientific experts for pharmaceutical and biotech companies. They engage with healthcare providers to share scientific information and gather insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
  • Provide scientific/medical education to healthcare professionals
  • Attend and present at medical conferences
  • Gather medical insights from the field
  • Support clinical trial activities
  • Respond to medical inquiries from HCPs

A Typical Day

MSLs typically:
- Meet with 2-3 KOLs or HCPs per day
- Travel within their territory (typically regional)
- Prepare scientific presentations
- Document interactions in CRM systems
- Attend internal meetings and training

Travel Requirements

  • Most MSL roles require 50-75% travel
  • Territory size varies by therapeutic area
  • Some roles are more regional, others national
  • Remote work for non-travel days

Compensation Range

  • Entry-level MSL: $180,000 - $220,000
  • Senior MSL: $200,000 - $260,000
  • Regional Medical Director: $250,000 - $350,000

Plus bonus (typically 15-25% of base) and company car or car allowance.

How to Become an MSL

  1. Identify your therapeutic area: Focus on your clinical expertise
  2. Build your network: Connect with current MSLs on LinkedIn
  3. Attend conferences: Many companies recruit at medical meetings
  4. Prepare your materials: Create a business-style resume
