Questions to Ask Them

An interview is a two-way evaluation, and thoughtful questions signal seriousness while surfacing the information you need to decide:

  • What does a typical week and call schedule look like for this role?

  • How is compensation structured, and how has it trended for physicians here?

  • What is the support-staff ratio, and are scribes or advanced practice providers available?

  • Why is this position open, and what happened to the previous physician?

  • What does success look like in the first year, and who would I report to?

  • What are the biggest challenges facing the group or department right now?

Red Flags to Notice

  • [ ] Evasive answers about compensation, call, or turnover

  • [ ] High recent departures from the group or department

  • [ ] Pressure to sign quickly without time for due diligence

  • [ ] A disconnect between what leadership says and what staff physicians say

After the Interview

  • [ ] Send thank-you notes within 24 hours

  • [ ] Follow up on any materials you promised to send

  • [ ] Document your impressions while they're fresh

  • [ ] Reach out to your contact if you haven't heard back in 1-2 weeks
