Centra Health
Centra Health is seeking a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Neonatologist to join their Level III NICU team at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. This role involves working in a cohesive unit with a strong reputation and contributing to the growth including a new patient tower with couplet care rooms.
Key Responsibilities
- • Work 24-hour shifts; in-house from ~8/9am through early afternoon, remainder on call
- • Participate in a shared call model with expectation of 1:3 as team grows
- • Collaborate in a team model of 1 Neonatologist + 1 NNP per shift
- • Provide leadership, assessments, and plan collaboration
- • Conduct procedures such as umbilical lines, intubations as needed, and occasional chest tubes
- • Lead neonatal emergency response and assist with transport as needed
- • Collaborate with UVA & Carilion referral partners and transport teams
- • Participate in statewide collaboratives (Late Preterm, Substance-Exposed Infant, QI initiatives)
Required
- • MD or DO with completion of Neonatology Fellowship
- • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
- • Unrestricted or eligible for Virginia medical licensure
- • Commitment to teamwork, communication, and quality improvement

You Can Expect
- Schedule: 24-hour shifts; in-house from ~8/9am through early afternoon, remainder on call
- Call: Shared model with expectation of 1:3 as team grows (low call burden with highly autonomous NNP support)
- Team Model: 1 Neonatologist + 1 NNP per shift
- NNPs conduct daily rounds; neonatologist provides leadership, assessments, and plan collaboration
- Supported by highly tenured nursing staff, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and more
- Unit: Licensed for 13 beds, 4 pods | Avg census: 10–13
- Acuity: Level III (B) — 25 weeks and up, “grower/feeder” focus, ventilation, no surgical cases onsite
- Procedures: Umbilical lines, intubations as needed, occasional chest tubes
- Deliveries: Vaginal and C-Section in a Baby Friendly labor and delivery environment
- NET Team: Lead neonatal emergency response and assist with transport as needed
- Collaboration: Strong referral partnership with UVA & Carilion with robust mentorship and transport teams
- Culture: Strong community support — low turnover, neonatal birthday celebrations, foundation-sponsored events
- Growth & Innovation: Participate in statewide collaboratives (Late Preterm, Substance-Exposed Infant, QI initiatives)
- Future Expansion: New patient tower coming — NICU will transition to couplet care rooms
- Start Date: Target of April 2026 (flexible to allow for onboarding/credentialing)
- Visa Support: J-1 and H-1B candidates welcomed
Required Qualifications
