The IU Center for Global Health Equity is seeking a senior research scientist to serve as Director of Research for the Center and co-Director of Research for the AMPATH Kenya Research Program. This role involves administrative leadership, collaborative research, and advancing global health research in low-resourced communities.
Key Responsibilities
- • Develop a strategic vision for the IUCGHE and AMPATH research programs, ensuring alignment with the broader goals of Indiana University and its global partners.
- • Partner with the overall leadership of the IUCGHE office as it supports and expands the tripartite academic mission of service, teaching, and research.
- • Establish the research program’s mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, and operational plans in partnership with the Director of the IUCGHE.
- • Partner in AMPATH’s Research Program activities with the AMPATH Kenya Co-director of Research.
- • Appoint, support, and review the work of faculty and staff funded to support the AMPATH research infrastructure and advise the MTRH CEO and MUCHS Principal on research infrastructure and policy.
- • Identify key strategic priorities for the further development of AMPATH research, jointly oversee the management by objectives of the AMPATH Research Program, and progress on process improvement initiatives.
- • Oversee the Research Program Office (RPO) with personnel at IU and in Eldoret, Kenya.
- • Lead responsibilities for AMPATH Research standard operating practices and policies in coordination with the AMPATH Kenya Co-Director of Research.
- • Support engagement and interactions with Moi University’s Institutional Research Ethics Committee, IU’s IRB, AMPATH’s Research and Sponsored Programs Office, IU’s Office for Research Operations, and other universities that are members of the AMPATH Consortium.
- • Manage the personnel and financial resources of the North American Research Program Office.
- • Provide strategic guidance and support to AMPATH replication efforts in Ghana, Mexico, and Nepal.
- • Co-chair the AMPATH Kenya Publications Committee.
- • Provide oversight of the AMPATH research newsletter and other research related communications.
- • Work with IU Institutes, Schools, Departments, and Administrative Units to expand the Global Health Research Portfolio.
- • Participate in identification and recruitment of investigators engaged in global health research.
- • Integrate research initiatives with the clinical and educational missions of IU and its international partner institutions.
- • Actively seek and secure funding to support the growth and sustainability of the IUCGHE and AMPATH research initiatives.
- • Lead efforts to strengthen research infrastructure and capacity within the IUCGHE, AMPATH, and partner institutions, including mentoring early-career investigators and enhancing local research capabilities in low-resource settings.
- • Establish and implement a personal portfolio of research as a principal investigator and co-investigator in global health settings.
- • Foster career development of global health investigators in the IUCGHE and AMPATH research environments.
- • Maintain productive and accountable reporting relationships to the Director of IUCGHE, IU School of Medicine’s Executive Associate Dean for Research, and the IU School of Medicine relevant clinical department chair and division head.
- • Maintain productive and collaborative relationships with the Principal of the Moi University College of Health Sciences, the Dean of the Moi University School of Medicine, the Chair of the relevant clinical department at Moi University School of Medicine, the CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and the Executive Director of Care for AMPATH Kenya.
Required
- • MD/DO, PhD, DrPH or PharmD with 7-10 years of global health or relevant health system experience.
- • Demonstrated leadership in global health research, including a track record of leading successful, large-scale research projects in global health, particularly in low-resource settings.
- • Experience in navigating the complexities of multi-institutional and cross-cultural collaborations.
- • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex research findings to diverse audiences.
- • A deep commitment to ethical research practices, including respect for participant rights, data integrity, and adherence to U.S. and international research regulations.

This is a key position within the administration of research for both the IUCGHE and the AMPATH Kenya Partnership, the latter being a collaboration between Indiana University and its US, Canadian, European partners (AMPATH Consortium), Moi University and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. We are seeking an active investigator with sufficient experience and maturity to work collaboratively for and within the IUCGHE and the AMPATH Consortium that conducts research to advance the health of people in low-resourced communities. In partnership with AMPATH Kenya’s Co-Director of Research, the North American Director of Research establishes policies and practices that assure high-quality research and research productivity with processes that comply with the policies of major extramural research sponsors and collaborating universities. The Director is expected to commit 30-35% of professional work life to this administrative work and also conduct research in a personal portfolio.
Programmatic Management and Governance Activities
- Develop a strategic vision for the IUCGHE and AMPATH research programs, ensuring alignment with the broader goals of Indiana University and its global partners. Lead initiatives that advance the field of global health research and position the IUCGHE as a leader in the field.
- Partner with the overall leadership of the IUCGHE office as it supports and expands the tripartite academic mission of service, teaching, and research.
- In partnership with the Director of the IUCGHE, establish the research program’s mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, and operational plans.
- Partner in AMPATH’s Research Program activities with the AMPATH Kenya Co-director of Research.
- With the AMPATH Kenya Co-Director of Research, appoint, support, and review the work of faculty and staff who are funded to support the AMPATH research infrastructure and advise the MTRH CEO and MUCHS Principal on matters of research infrastructure and policy.
