Assistant Professor Term Emergency Medicine - Toxicology

This role involves providing expert medical toxicology consultation, supporting the Poison Control Center, and serving as a clinical leader in toxicology within the Emergency Medicine department. The position includes teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows, overseeing education and evaluation, delivering high-quality emergency care, and engaging in scholarly activities and departmental service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert consultation in medical toxicology, including bedside and telephone consultations, and support to the Poison Control Center.
  • Serve as a clinical leader in toxicology within the Department of Emergency Medicine, enhancing the integration of toxicology into emergency care and resident education.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and didactic settings with a focus on medical toxicology.
  • Oversee the education and evaluation of medical students and residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
  • Provide high-quality emergency care in the University of Louisville Hospital Emergency Department.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and departmental service as appropriate for rank.
  • Fulfill core residency faculty responsibilities, including mentorship, evaluation, recruitment, conference leadership, and program development.
Required
  • Board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine (ABEM/AOBEM) and Medical Toxicology.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Kentucky.
  • Demonstrated excellence in toxicology consultation, education, and emergency care.
  • Proven academic productivity and leadership in toxicology and/or emergency medicine.
  • Commitment to patient care.
Preferred
  • Experience in program development and interdepartmental collaboration is highly desirable.

Position Description:

The University of Louisville School of Medicine (UofL SOM), established in 1837, invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Open Rank) in the Department of Emergency Medicine. We are seeking a dynamic, Emergency Medicine and fellowship-trained Medical Toxicology physician who is committed to academic medicine, medical education, and clinical excellence. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing medical toxicology services, while also contributing to the department’s missions in education, clinical care, and research.

About Us:

The University of Louisville Hospital is a 404-bed tertiary care facility and the primary adult teaching hospital for UofL SOM. It is the region’s only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Adult Burn Unit. The Department of Emergency Medicine operates a state-of-the-art emergency department with 43 treatment areas spanning 30,000 sq. ft., caring for over 60,000 patients annually. A 24-bed Emergency Department Observation Unit is opening in mid-June 2025.
