Physician Surgeon Specialist (Flexi)

The Physician–Surgeon will provide high-quality, safe, and compassionate surgical care for adult patients, including diagnosis, operative care, post-operative follow-up, and participation in multidisciplinary care teams. The role also involves contributing to quality, patient safety, and innovation initiatives within the surgical practice and hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform surgical procedures appropriate to the surgeon’s specialty, including laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgeries, as well as complex general surgical procedures in the hospital and affiliated surgical suites.
  • Provide pre-operative consultation and evaluation, review medical history, order and interpret diagnostic tests, assess surgical risk, and obtain informed consent.
  • Collaborate with anesthesia, nursing, advanced practice providers, specialists, and support teams to develop and implement peri-operative and post-operative care plans.
  • Manage post-operative care, monitor recovery, manage complications, and provide follow-up visits and discharge planning.
  • Participate in surgical on-call coverage as required, ensuring continuity of care for emergent surgical cases.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record and adhere to hospital, regulatory, and credentialing policies.
  • Contribute to quality improvement programs, patient safety initiatives, peer review, and surgical service growth strategies.
  • Engage in professional development, maintain credentials, and stay current with surgical advances and best practices.
  • Participate in physician practice management responsibilities as necessary, including outpatient clinic operations, referrals, and patient education.
  • Support Chesapeake Regional Healthcare’s mission and values of service, dignity, safety, integrity, and innovation.
Required
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited school of medicine.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical residency program in the applicable specialty.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in the relevant surgical specialty.
  • Active or eligible for unrestricted medical license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current DEA registration or ability to obtain.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a full range of surgical procedures relevant to the specialty, including minimally invasive and/or robotic approaches where applicable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills with a commitment to patient-centered care and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic hospital environment and contribute to service growth.
Preferred
  • Experience in a community hospital or health system environment, surgical practice development, or teaching/mentorship experience.
