Physician (Director- Bone Marrow Transplant Unit)
The Bone Marrow Transplant Director manages the daily administrative and clinical operations of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Puget Sound VA Healthcare System. This role involves working in inpatient wards, outpatient, and subspecialty clinic areas, with responsibilities including patient admission, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation for blood and malignant disorders.
Key Responsibilities
- • Responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Section at the Puget Sound VA Healthcare System
- • Work in the MTU Inpatient wards and MTU Outpatient and other Subspecialty Clinic areas
- • Admit, evaluate, diagnose, provide treatment or consultative services to patients presenting with illness and disorders of the blood, blood forming tissues and malignant disorders
- • Perform specialty procedures as delineated in their clinical privileges
- • Take part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure) and quality assurance activities
- • Supervision, training, and teaching of the University of Washington Hematology/Oncology fellows and students who are assigned to the VA
Required
- • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- • Proficiency in spoken and written English
- • Physical Requirements: Reaching above shoulder, Use of fingers, Both hands required, Both legs required, Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Both eyes required, Depth perception, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Hearing (aid may be permitted)

- • Significant experience in allogeneic transplantation including patient and donor selection, identification of regimens as well as management of acute and chronic GVHD and transplant infection

- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
- rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
- Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs

- The Bone Marrow Transplant Director is responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Section at the Puget Sound VA Healthcare System and reports directly to the Hospital and Specialty Medicine Care Line Director
- The Bone Marrow Transplant (MTU) Director will work in the following units: MTU Inpatient wards and MTU Outpatient and other Subspecialty Clinic areas
- The teaching program is affiliated with the University Of Washington School of Medicine - and a faculty appointment commensurate with training and experience will also be considered
