Medical Director, Student Health Services

The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight for Student Health Services, ensuring high-quality, student-centered medical care. This role sets clinical standards, supervises medical staff, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports the health and well-being of the university population while collaborating with university leadership and clinic staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide medical oversight for all clinical services offered by Student Health Services (SHS)
  • Establish, review, and update clinical policies, protocols, and standards of care
  • Ensure safe, ethical, and evidence-based medical practice by providing direct patient care to undergraduate and graduate students, as appropriate
  • Provide clinical consultation and mentorship to healthcare staff, serving as a primary resource for complex case management and best practices
  • Ensure continuity and quality of care, including referrals and follow-up
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., licensure, HIPAA, OSHA)
  • Oversee quality improvement initiatives and clinical risk management
  • Participate in chart review and peer review processes
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation of clinical staff
  • Provide mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities
  • Collaborate with university departments, including the Rice Counseling Center, Student Disability Resource Center, Student Wellbeing Office, The SAFE Office, Athletics, and Study Abroad
  • Provide input to and advise university leadership on campus-wide health issues, policies, and student health trends (e.g., public health concerns and disease outbreaks)
  • Adjudicate and make recommendations regarding grievances and concerns related to operational processes
  • Manage oversight of the clinic’s budget, hiring, and staff-related matters
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
  • Provide annual vaccination clinics for the campus community
  • Maintain Point and Click, including online scheduling and the health portal
  • Support campus-wide health promotion and disease prevention initiatives
  • Assist with event development and planning, including training and engagement activities
  • Assist with preparation for large capital improvement projects
  • Provide feedback on policies related to the management of general operations
Required
  • Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD) or Osteopathy (DO) from an accredited institution, with active licensure to practice medicine in Texas
  • 4+ years of postdoctoral experience in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, or a related primary care specialty
  • Completion of a minimum of three years of residency training, with board eligibility or certification in Family Practice or Internal Medicine
  • Registration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for appropriate prescription authority
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with an emphasis on teamwork, motivation, coaching, mentoring, and professional development of all SHS staff
  • Skill in examining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and implementing new strategies and procedures
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities in clinical, procedural, organizational, and operational contexts
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, and faculty in a team environment
  • Knowledge of health education programs, policies, and current healthcare trends
  • Ability to continuously monitor medical advances and integrate applicable innovations into SHS operations
  • Knowledge of and experience with electronic health record systems
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems

  • Prior leadership or medical director experience
  • Experience working with college or university populations
  • Knowledge of public health principles and preventive care
  • Experience in interdisciplinary or integrated healthcare settings

Position Summary:
The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight for Rice University Student Health Services, ensuring high-quality, student-centered medical care. This role is responsible for setting clinical standards, supervising medical staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the health and well-being of Rice’s diverse university population. The Medical Director works collaboratively with university leadership and clinic staff to align health services with the institution’s mission. This role will lead the development of strategic planning, budgeting, and programming for the clinic.

Workplace Requirements:
This position is full-time and exclusively on site, requiring all duties to be performed in person at Rice University. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $240,000 – $243,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:
