Assistant Professor of Clinical - Surgery, Surgical Oncology - Breast

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the program
  • Coordinates and provides scheduling services for physicians to ensure coverage to perform services when scheduled
  • Maintains administrative records pertaining to the scheduling of all physicians and ensures the hospital(s) has/have reasonable access to such records
  • Performs daily unit rounds on all assigned inpatients and performs all inpatient follow up during the inpatient stay
  • Provides outpatient professional medical services performed in all scheduled clinics related to the Program
  • Participates in regular outpatient clinics for the Program
  • Coordinates inpatient care and clinic care under the Program with the patient’s primary physician
  • Collaborates with other physicians and hospital personnel (including case managers) to reduce medically unnecessary use of resources and length of stay and coordinate interdepartmental patient care
  • Provides assistance as needed to bed control and other hospital personnel to facilitate patient throughput
  • Responds in a timely fashion to patients, other physicians or hospital personnel making patient care-related inquiries
  • Works collaboratively to implement clinical effectiveness programs, including clinical pathways and other similar guidelines and protocols as needed
  • Participates in all root cause analysis and related activities conducted for the Program at all sites of service
  • Works collaboratively with hospital personnel to implement the quality goals of the Program and implement quality initiatives to address any identified deficiencies
  • Participates in periodic meetings with unit personnel at the hospital related to core measures and patient and physician satisfaction
  • Implements teaching activities related to residents and fellows rotating through the Program
  • Works with hospital personnel to obtain all mutually agreed upon program designations of distinction
  • Provides professional medical services twenty four hours a day and seven days a week for 365 days a year to all inpatients/outpatients in the Program in collaboration with other Faculty in the section and the division
Required
  • Applicants should have a strong commitment to patient care and education and an interest in clinical research
  • Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or related field, followed by 4 years in medical school and additional residency and fellowship specialty training
  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in surgery
  • Able to obtain and maintain a valid DEA Registration and Florida Medical License
  • Completed an ACGME approved plastic surgery fellowship
  • 0–5 years post fellowship clinical experience in the field of breast surgery preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette
  • Performs duties in tactful and professional manner

  • Fluency in Spanish is greatly valued because of local and regional demographics

General Description (Purpose and Function): 

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School of Medicine is seeking a fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in breast and cutaneous oncology to join our surgical oncology team. We have strong multidisciplinary programs in breast and cutaneous oncology that work to provide high quality clinical care and access to cutting edge clinical trials. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only university-based, NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and is focused on innovation in cancer care.   

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort): 

Job responsibilities include participation in clinical and educational activities as they relate to the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Department of Surgery with a special emphasis on breast reconstruction:  

  • Oversees outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the program 

  • Coordinates and provide scheduling services for physicians to ensure coverage to perform services when scheduled 

  • Maintain administrative records pertaining to the scheduling of all physicians and ensure the hospital (s) has/have reasonable access to such records 

  • Perform daily unit rounds  on all assigned inpatients and perform all inpatient follow up during the inpatient stay 

  • Provide outpatient professional medical services performed in all scheduled clinics related to the Program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Along with proper training and certification, the incumbent must have a keen interest in and concern for the needs of plastic surgery patients, and other related surgical anamolies 

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques  

  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments 

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette 

  • Performs duties in tactful and professional manner 

  • Fluency in Spanish is greatly valued because our local and regional demographics. 

 

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements): 

Applicants should have a strong commitment to patient care and education and an interest in clinical research Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or related field, followed by 4 years in medical school and additional residency and fellowship specialty training. 

  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in surgery, be able to obtain and maintain a valid DEA Registration and Florida Medical License, and have completed an ACGME approved plastic surgery fellowship.
