Physician - Deputy Chief of Gastroenterology

The role involves providing full-time gastroenterology and hepatology clinical services, including outpatient care, electronic consultations, and performing standard GI procedures such as EGD and colonoscopies. The position also includes administrative responsibilities such as supervising gastroenterology section activities, overseeing advanced practice providers, and supporting the section chief in managing daily operations and addressing various issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a full time Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist
  • Provide outpatient and electronic consultation services related to gastroenterology and hepatology
  • Oversee the administration of conscious sedation
  • Perform standard GI procedures such as EGD (upper endoscopy), colonoscopies, and other procedures
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with gastrointestinal diseases according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques
  • Work in collaboration with gastroenterology advance practice provider(s) throughout the Orlando Healthcare System
  • Work alongside the chief of gastroenterology and support the section's administrative duties
  • Supervise the outpatient activities of the section of gastroenterology
  • Supervise the activities of the advanced practice provider(s)
  • Assist the section Chief in addressing congressional, patient's complaints, discipline staff, arrange coverage, and/or manage the daily activities of the section
  • Provide administrative, programmatic, and clinical leadership under the Chief of Gastroenterology to ensure achievement of clinical, research, and education goals
  • Report to the Chief of Medicine and act as Chief of Gastroenterology when required
  • Serve as a key clinical resource for the Chief of Medicine and the Chief of Staff
  • Perform hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the service
  • Allocate time as 70% clinical duties and 30% administrative duties
  • Work full-time, Monday through Friday
  • Participate in call duties split among the Gastroenterology staff
Required
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • Degree obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Gastroenterology
  • Physical requirements including visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity
  • Ability to perform potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing
  • Ability to transfer patients and objects
  • Ability to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures
  • Ability to handle occasional exposure to combative patients secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders
  • Mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs
  • Completion of annual Employee Health requirements such as annual TB screening or testing
  • Ability to assist with positioning of patients
  • Physically, emotionally, and mentally competent and able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation without hazard to self or others

  • Subspeciality training in Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology strongly preferred
  • Experience in working with Veterans in a clinical and/or hospital setting

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • English Language: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Additional Requirement: Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Gastroenterology
