Physician - Chief of Gastroenterology

This role involves evaluation and care of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, performing clinical examinations, endoscopy consultations, and developing treatment and follow-up plans. The physician will also participate in discharge planning, interdisciplinary patient care, tumor boards, and educational activities of the gastroenterology fellowship, managing acute and chronic care needs and coordinating subspecialty evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluation and care of patients in the outpatient clinic
  • Evaluation and care of the patients in the inpatient/hospital setting
  • Performing clinical examination, endoscopy consultation, and developing treatment and follow-up plans
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic general endoscopy, including, but limited to, upper endoscopy with any indicated intervention, colonoscopy with any indicated intervention
  • Responsible for completing patient encounters, notes, and correctly coding visits in accordance with coding guidelines
  • Physician will participate in discharge planning and interdisciplinary patient care plan for inpatients
  • Physician will participate in tumor boards and all the educational activities of the gastroenterology fellowship
  • Gastroenterology physician is highly skilled in the management of patients acute and/or chronic care needs and coordinates subspecialty evaluation and treatment
  • Incumbent will also be responsible for the evaluation, care, and disposition of patients, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, determining need for hospitalization and/or transferring the patient to another facility
  • Incumbent should be experienced at management of medical conditions requiring hospitalization and interested in engaging in ongoing process improvement with respect to measures of quality care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, patient and family education, utilization management, and cost control
  • The incumbent participates, oversees and collaborates to ensure that all applicable clinical functions which include outpatient and inpatient consultative medical care are performed
  • GI Physicians are tasked with providing timely and courteous service to all Veterans seeking care
  • Some of the GI providers are physicians who oversee research programs funded by VHA
  • Learners including medical students, residents, and fellows from the affiliate rotate through the VA GI consultation service and in the outpatient clinics and endoscopy suite
Required
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • English Language: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in the specialty/sub-specialty indicated in the announcement
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs

  • Additional training and expertise in capsule endoscopy, esophageal manometry, liver biopsy, paracentesis, fibroscan interpretation desired but not required

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
