Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice, Surgery-Transplant

This position provides faculty support to meet the teaching, research, and patient care needs of the Department of Surgery, Section of Transplant Surgery, with a focus on kidney/pancreas transplant surgery. Responsibilities include direct patient care, teaching activities, advancing clinical knowledge through research, and administrative duties such as supervising residents and participating in committee memberships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including surgery, consultative services, outpatient services, and care of hospitalized patients
  • Participate in all teaching activities of the Department including conferences and lectures, bedside teaching and rounds
  • Supervise house staff in the operating room, clinics, and in-patient services
  • Participate in continuing medical education and local, regional, and national meetings
  • Teach medical students, house staff, nursing, and allied health students
  • Advance clinical knowledge through scholarly and research efforts
  • Participate in either basic research (laboratory) or clinical research and publication of scientific articles
  • Supervise and evaluate residents
  • Provide medical direction
  • Participate in committee memberships at the departmental and health system level
Required
  • Graduate of an approved medical school
  • Completed an approved residency training program
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible (BC/BE) in Transplant Surgery
  • Texas Medical license without restrictions

Essential Job Functions

The purpose of this position is to provide faculty support to meet the teaching, research, and patient care needs of the Department of Surgery, Section of Transplant Surgery, and assist in fulfilling UTMB’s threefold mission. This position will have a kidney/ pancreas focus in Transplant surgery. The person in this position is responsible for providing direct patient care, including surgery, consultative services, outpatient services, and care of hospitalized patients. He/she participates in all teaching activities of the Department including conferences and lectures, bedside teaching and rounds; house staff supervision in the operating room, clinics, and in-patient services; continuing medical education; and local, regional, and national meetings. Students include medical students, house staff, nursing, and allied health students. He/she is also responsible for advancing clinical knowledge through his/her scholarly and research efforts and will participate in either basic research (laboratory) or clinical research and publication of scientific articles. In addition, the person in this position will have administrative responsibilities including supervising and evaluating residents, providing medical direction, and participating in committee memberships at the departmental and health system level.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should be a graduate of an approved medical school, have completed an approved residency training program, be Board Certified or Board Eligible (BC/BE) in Transplant Surgery, and have a Texas Medical license without restrictions.
