Physician- Outpatient Psychiatrist
The staff psychiatrist performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and provides a full range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions for Veterans with various psychiatric disorders. The role involves working in multiple clinical settings and supporting the Behavioral Health multidisciplinary team through clinical education, consult coordination, and specialty clinic referral triage.
Key Responsibilities
- • Performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations on Veterans who suffer from depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders using a patient-centered team approach
- • Provides care in outpatient, telehealth, residential, inpatient, and consultation-liaison clinical settings
- • Provides diagnostic assessment, mental status examination, psychotherapy, medication evaluation & management
- • Serves as a subject matter expert supporting the Behavioral Health multidisciplinary team by providing clinical education, coordinating consults, and triaging specialty clinic referrals
- • Ensures all clinical care is delivered in accordance with TJC, CARF, HIPPA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education
- • Participates in the supervision and teaching of trainees in support of the VA mission
- • Encouraged to participate in research projects
- • May rotate call duties with other psychiatrists for after-hours/weekends for inpatient admissions and emergency consultation on a regular rotation
- • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm
Required
- • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- • Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
- • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- • Proficiency in spoken and written English
- • Physical Requirements: Light lifting under 15 pounds, light carrying under 15 pounds, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (2 hours), standing (1 hour), repeated bending (1 hour), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, working closely with others and working alone

- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
- rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
- Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
