The Clinical Advisory Dean (CAD) mentors and advises third- and fourth-year medical students through key academic and career milestones during their clinical years. The role includes guiding students on clerkships, residency applications, and career planning, as well as teaching, supervising residents, leading Grand Rounds, and participating in research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- • Meet a minimum of three times annually with third-year students to discuss transition to clerkships, senior year schedule, elective planning, academic review, career strategy, and MSPE preparation
- • Provide structured advising to fourth-year students on the residency application process including application overview, personal statement and MSPE drafting, CV/application reviews, mock interviews, and rank list review
- • Attend two-to-three annual meetings with Career Services and fellow CADs and consult with Career Services about student concerns
- • Offer availability during daytime and early evening hours for student advising
- • Lead the department's Grand Rounds presenting clinical cases, research updates, or specialty topics
- • Teach residents, fellows, and medical students
- • Provide structured didactics, clinical teaching, and mentorship across training levels
- • Provide occasional Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry coverage supervising residents
- • Supervise residents responding to psychiatric consults in medical and surgical units ensuring timely evaluation and management
- • Participate in departmental research initiatives or lead independent projects including designing and conducting studies, collaborating on grant-funded projects, and submitting abstracts and manuscripts
Required
- • Medical Doctor Degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree
- • New York State Medical Doctor/Physician Licensure
- • Distinguished record of scholarship, and be an accomplished teacher or passionate mentor in the field of medicine

Job Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a part-time Clinical Advisory Dean, Professor (HS).
The Clinical Advisory Dean (CAD) serves as a dedicated mentor and advisor to approximately 15 third-year and 15 fourth-year medical students annually. CADs guide students through key academic and career milestones during their clinical years, providing one-on-one support and expert advice.
Key Responsibilities
- Third-Year Students:
- Meet a minimum of three times annually
- Sept/Oct: Transition to clerkships and early career planning
- Jan/Feb: Senior year schedule and elective planning
- June/July: Academic review, career strategy, and MSPE preparation
- Fourth-Year Students:
- Provide structured advising on the residency application process
- June/July: Application overview
- Aug/Sept: Personal statement and MSPE drafting; CV/application reviews
- Oct: Mock interviews (as needed)
- Jan/Feb: Rank list review
- CADs also attend two-to-three annual meetings with Career Services and fellow CADs, and are expected to consult with Career Services about student concerns. All scheduling is centrally managed, but CADs must offer availability during daytime and early evening hours. This role is in addition to current clinical/academic duties unless otherwise adjusted by departmental leadership. Flexibility from students and Career Services will support the integration of these responsibilities.
