Global Senior Director, Scientific Operations

The Global Senior Director, Scientific Operations is responsible for strategic and operational accountability across PSTS, integrating global strategic planning, portfolio operations, facilities and laboratory operations, and strategic outsourcing. This role partners with leadership to translate scientific strategy into operational plans, oversee portfolio operations, and lead global outsourcing strategy while fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture and providing leadership and mentorship to a global team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with the PSTS Global Leadership Team to translate scientific strategy into integrated operational, portfolio, and outsourcing plans.
  • Drive harmonization of global business processes, scenario planning, capacity alignment, and change management to enable delivery of PSTS short‑ and long‑term objectives.
  • Provide strategic oversight of PSTS portfolio operations, ensuring alignment between scientific priorities, operational capacity, resourcing, timelines, and financial commitments.
  • Establish and maintain portfolio governance frameworks, performance metrics, and decision‑support processes to enable effective prioritization, risk management, and trade‑off decisions across PSTS.
  • Lead PSTS global outsourcing strategy, including in‑house versus outsource assessments, CRO governance frameworks, vendor qualification, performance management, KPI development, external portfolio budget forecasting, escalation processes, and long‑term partner optimization.
  • Foster a collaborative, high‑performance culture, serve as a visible and effective change agent for global initiatives, and provide strategic decision‑making across all areas of responsibility while nurturing innovation and talent development.
  • Serve as a member of the PSTS Cross-Functional Operations Leadership team responsible for review and approval of all PSTS operational strategies and contribute to issue review and recommendation/resolution processes.
  • Serve as a global champion and leader for staff change management and engagement strategy, continuous improvement projects promoting individual and team development, and development of institutional knowledge and best practices.
  • Lead a team of operational professionals providing leadership, mentorship, and career development opportunities for global team members.
  • Responsible for future capital planning, innovation strategy, portfolio governance, budget, resourcing, and timeline commitments for operational activities.
Required
  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, DVM, MD, or equivalent) in a scientific discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in laboratory sciences, operations, portfolio management, and/or outsourcing within pharmaceutical R&D and/or CRO environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of nonclinical sciences and R&D business operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in portfolio governance, prioritization, and decision‑support frameworks.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute enterprise‑level strategy and business transformation initiatives.
  • Experience with program, portfolio, and financial management.
  • Ability to translate data into insights and strategies into executable action plans.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated people leadership and change management experience.

The Global Senior Director, Scientific Operations will serve as a key partner to the Vice President, Global Head of Scientific & In Vivo Strategies (SIS) and the PSTS Global Leadership Team. The role will have overall strategic and operational accountability across PSTS, integrating global strategic planning, portfolio operations, facilities and laboratory operations, and strategic outsourcing across a global network.

Oversight of Operational Planning across PSTS:

Partner with the PSTS Global Leadership Team to translate scientific strategy into integrated operational, portfolio, and outsourcing plans. Drive harmonization of global business processes, scenario planning, capacity alignment, and change management to enable delivery of PSTS short‑ and long‑term objectives.

Oversight of PSTS Portfolio Operations:

Provide strategic oversight of PSTS portfolio operations, ensuring alignment between scientific priorities, operational capacity, resourcing, timelines, and financial commitments. Establish and maintain portfolio governance frameworks, performance metrics, and decision‑support processes to enable effective prioritization, risk management, and trade‑off decisions across PSTS.

Oversight of Strategic Outsourcing & External Partnerships:

Lead PSTS global outsourcing strategy, including in‑house versus outsource assessments, CRO governance frameworks, vendor qualification, performance management, KPI development, external portfolio budget forecasting, escalation processes, and long‑term partner optimization.

The Senior Director will foster a collaborative, high‑performance culture, serve as a visible and effective change agent for global initiatives, and provide strategic decision‑making across all areas of responsibility while nurturing innovation and talent development.

As a member of the PSTS Cross-Functional Operations Leadership team, the person in this role will be responsible for the review and approval of all PSTS operational strategies as well as be a primary contributor to issue review and recommendation/resolution processes.

The role will serve as a global champion and leader for staff change management and engagement strategy, continuous improvement projects that promote individual development, team development, development of institutional knowledge and best practices for leveraging the entire PSTS network in an optimal manner.

This role will directly and indirectly (through matrix relationships) lead a team of operational professionals providing leadership, mentorship, and career development opportunities for the global team members. This role will be responsible for future capital planning, innovation strategy, portfolio governance, budget, resourcing and timeline commitments for operational activities.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education: Advanced degree (MS, PhD, DVM, MD, or equivalent) in a scientific discipline.     

                                                   

Required Years of Related Experience:  Minimum 10 years of experience in laboratory sciences, operations, portfolio management, and/or outsourcing within pharmaceutical R&D and/or CRO environments.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·  Strong working knowledge of nonclinical sciences and R&D business operations

· Demonstrated experience in portfolio governance, prioritization, and decision‑support frameworks

· Proven ability to develop and execute enterprise‑level strategy and business transformation initiatives

· Experience with program, portfolio, and financial management

·  Ability to translate data into insights and strategies into executable action plans

·  Strong stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills

·   Demonstrated people leadership and change management experience

Expected travel: 20% domestic and international.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.


The anticipated base pay range for this position is $173,000 to $299,000.
