Medical Director (DOH/TURQ#30765)

This role ensures clinically safe, legally compliant, and medically appropriate care at a substance use treatment facility, overseeing medical providers and enforcing medical policies. The position involves responsibility for all patient medical care and services at Turquoise Lodge Hospital, with remote oversight of other substance use facilities, including managing medication variance processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure that care is clinically safe, legally compliant, and medically appropriate.
  • Oversee medical providers with various licenses, including mid-level practitioners, specialists, and pharmacy staff.
  • Enforce Department of Health medical policies.
  • Supervise all providers at Turquoise Lodge Hospital.

Required
  • Requires a license to practice medicine in New Mexico.
  • Psychiatrist, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, or Emergency Medicine Board Certification.
  • Must possess an active controlled substance license and DEA registration in New Mexico.
  • Six (6) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
  • Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.
  • Must successfully complete post offered preemployment criminal records background check conditional pending results.
  • Employment is subject to preemployment and random testing in accordance with federal and state law, rules and regulation in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
Preferred
  • Experience working with adults who have substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders in a hospital setting.
  • Experience prescribing, ordering, interpreting test results, continuity of treatment, rehabilitation, discharge planning/programming, and services and activities to ensure effective and timely process in evaluations.
  • Involvement and implementation of corrective action in all cases of patient and/or staff abuse.
  • Experience with high risk behaviors (assault/suicidal behavior), and other significant/sentinel events.
  • Supervision of staff and working in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
Salary

$132.49 - $225.23 Hourly

$275,577 - $468,481 Annually

This position is a Pay Band C20

The New Mexico Department of Health operates 3 Substance Use facilities: Turquoise Lodge Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico Rehabilitation Center in Roswell and Epi-Duran in Las Vegas New Mexico. These facilities specialize in inpatient medical detoxification, inpatient social rehabilitation services, Intensive Outpatient Services and outpatient Addiction Medicine Services.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience: working with adults who have substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders in a hospital setting. Experience prescribing, ordering, interpreting test results, continuity of treatment, rehabilitation, discharge planning/programing, and services and activities to ensure effective and timely process in evaluations. Employment is subject to preemployment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulation in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. You must possess and maintain a valid Driver¿s License. Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a specialty hospital for substance use disorders. Expose or visual/Video Display Termina (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Long periods of walking, sitting, standing, bending, and lifting to 50 pounds may be required. Exposure to potentially violent patients in a volatile situation. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. Some travel may be required to other facilities (New Mexico Rehabilitation Center in Roswell and Epi Duran and Las Vegas).
