The Medical Director will oversee clinical directorship and provide anatomic pathology general surgical pathology services at multiple sites, ensuring medical quality of laboratory services. This role involves regulatory compliance, clinical consultation, quality assurance oversight, and collaboration with pathologists and lab staff to support patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- • Provide as needed on-site pathologist coverage at two clinic sites in Seattle, WA and Everett, WA
- • General surgical primary pathology sign-out to include GI, breast, GU, and IHC, and with an emphasis on GI and breast biopsy diagnoses.
- • Frozen section diagnoses/analysis and peripheral blood smear evaluations
- • Ability to function in a collegial manner with all pathologists and other staff at PhenoPath and the outpatient Optum clinic-based pathology labs, including sharing clinical pathology call with other pathologists, coordination of time off to ensure adequate service coverage, and timely review of colleagues’ difficult cases when requested
- • Availability to PhenoPath, Quest customers, and lab staff as questions/concerns arise
- • As appropriate, participation in PhenoPath committees and/or the development of PhenoPath informational/marketing materials
- • Maintaining appropriate licensing/accreditation and keeping abreast of the relevant pathology literature via participation in CME or similar activities
- • Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, employees, clients, vendors, and the company
- • Performing other assigned duties or tasks on an as-needed basis
- • Regulatory & accreditation readiness. Fulfill CLIA ’88 Laboratory Director, Clinical Consultant, and Testing Personnel responsibilities; assure lab is in compliance with CAP accreditation requirements.
- • Clinical consultation & interpretation. Provide medical guidance on test significance, data interpretation, and correlation to support diagnosis and patient management.
- • Stay current with medical literature to ensure evidence-based, quality patient care decisions.
- • Quality Assurance Oversight. Drive QA/QI plans using tools like proficiency testing, inter-lab QC, positivity rate monitoring, and medical report audits to maintain analytical accuracy.
- • Proficiency testing compliance. Ensure PT enrollment per CLIA/CAP guidelines, investigate failures and near-misses, and develop alternative assessments where formal PT isn’t available.
- • Personnel competency & authorization. Assess competency for all staff and formally authorize individuals to perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions.
- • Reference lab oversight. Select and continuously monitor reference laboratories for service quality, analytical performance, and proper licensure.
- • Test development & validation. When appropriate, direct research efforts include experimental design, new assay development, and validation of emerging tests/services.
Required
- • M.D. / D.O.
- • Board Certification in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology
- • Unrestricted Washington State Medical License (or ability to obtain).
- • Experience supervising high complexity testing in an inpatient and/or outpatient laboratory setting.
- • 3-5+ years post residency surgical pathology sign-out experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient laboratory setting and significant recent GI and breast biopsy sign-out experience
Preferred
- • Subspecialty fellowship training and/or sign-out experience in one or more of the following: GI, GYN, Breast, Soft Tissue, GU, Head and Neck, Hematopathology, or Cytopathology a plus
- • Experience in frozen section diagnosis and peripheral blood smear diagnosis/evaluation; experience with ROSE and EBUS Cytological procedures a plus
- • Willingness to participate in clinical care committees and tumor boards

Pay Range: $385,000 - $405,000/year
Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications are obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.
